This piece arose from a photograph of a black cake tin sitting on a white plate that I took on Christmas day. I started fiddling around with it in photoshop, and applying different textures, and playing with the idea that it could be a hole or an object. I am aware of the similarities to the Autechre CD cover, but it was completely unintentional. The textures and lines are a way to confuse the eye and to further the concept but I'm not sure where it is going or what I will do with it. I am currently working layouts for another project and this is a good way to break from that and do something else.

Played a show last night . . .well, it was a little bit of fun really. The last one for the year, and the probably the final one under the name 'Czura'. Kieran Ryan and Ben Taylor joined in on a slightly drunken chaotic improv, which consisted of lots of synth noises and pint drinking. Somewhere in the chaos was something interesting I think. Hats off to the other performers who were all really amazing. Thanks again to my good friend Kevin Victor for providing an amazing video piece.

It's my birthday today. . .figured a proper update was in order. Played Make it Up Club with my good friend Atticus Bastow from ROUSSEMOFF, and it went rather well. There were sections of it that did and didn't work but I think overall it was ok. This was probably my favourite gig I have played so far, and there are more to follow. We had 4 different avenues to record with, and only one worked . . .thanks to the sound guy. I forgot to hit record on my Ableton session, Atticus forgot to hit record on the zoom, and the video cut out because my phone filled up.

I forgot all about this image . . .even though it's actually stuck up on the wall in front of me. I am working on a project at the moment that involves an unidentifiable image, or an indiscernable image. I can't figure it out, and it's getting a little bit frustrating, and that's ok it's not the end of the world. I want to keep working on it and see what happens. I found myself staring off into space at this image, until I pulled it down and scanned it for no real reason, it just struck me as being a slightly sad image.

Things I have been doing: I played another 'CZURA' show, and it went pretty well. I wasn't that over joyed with my own performance, but was knocked dead by the other guys. Incredible. I am currently preparing some artwork for Sleep Parade, not sure when or if this will see the light of day. I have been taking a lot of photos again, mainly because of the iphone 4.

Have not really posted much lately, but I have been doing a few things. I played a 2 more shows, and got booked in for another one. This is the video link to one of the shows I did, as a solo piece with a tape recorder and some other bits. This was my best little performance to date, and was actually a bit of a rush to play. I learn so much each time I do it, and always feel that I can do so much better. The video art was provided by Kevin Victor, who also filmed and edited the show. I am currently working on a couple of things, and also procrastinating applying for design school.

Czura - Destruction Experiment, Part 1. by shanereynolds

Found 5 tape recorders at work, that were being thrown out. I made this by patching one of them into another recorder and had some other crap running . . .and this is the result. Lots of fun to make, and strangely this (of all things) has kind of broken me out of the creative slumber. Hopefully I can attempt this thing live at some point, would really love to do this through a good P.A.

i have not really made any posts lately, simply because I am going through a little bit of 'artists block'. I was always told at art school to work through them, and eventually something will come . . .but I always felt as if that was like trying to awaken a dead horse by beating on it with a hammer, all you will end up with is a mess. It's not all that bad, I have started drawing again . . .and much to my delight I enjoy it again. The idea of creating an artwork that exists in a physical form kind of bothers me these days, I have come to like things that can be reproduced over and over again without the need for the coveted 'original'. The drawings and forms that come to mind are sort of abstract landscapes, sort of in keeping with a few digital works I have done. Who knows if these will eventuate into anything else, but they are fun none the less.

Making some hand made CD's with Atticus from ROUSSEMOFF. These CD's will be a limited edition of 100, and will be available online, and at gigs. . .each one is completely unique.

Something I have been working on tonight. I was watching the movie 'Collateral' with Tom Cruise, which I think is one of his only decent films. I have been struggling with this idea, and so I did a little playing around with it. It comes from a photo of a friend, and was an image that has been stuck in my head for weeks and weeks. This is still an absolute work in progress.

Something I whipped up in about 10 seconds in Photoshop for the upcoming gig. I actually really dig these, the gory one reminds of the credits to a 70s horror movie which was completely intentional.

I forgot to post these from a while ago, these are some pieces I worked on while doing the 'Reflux' thing, and also the Sleep Parade poster. It was nice to have a break from those things and work on something for myself. I'm really not sure what the direction here is, but it's similar to the Reflux idea of shifting perspectives, and the circle thing sort of represents 'oneness' or a whole object to bring the eye in a certain direction. I also really like the idea of including the colour pink in more artwork in the future.

A few recent things . . .

Sleep Parade poster, for street/and press. The 'Reflux' CD, which turned out really really well. Lastly, a random photo I took in my house when the light was really beautifully hitting the wall.

Another performance this time, which again was an interesting experience. I feel as though I may not have taken the audio as far as I would have liked, but I think the film by Rod Gill is excellent, and a huge part of the performance for me is documentation. I will edit this post to include the video, here are a couple of stills.

It's interesting the way these things work, in that . . .ideas shift and change, and sometimes there is something nagging away at my subconscious that says 'change it'. This is likely to be the FINAL design for this project, and should be off to print very very soon. I decided to change the rune/symbol thing in the middle because I felt that the last one didn't really cut it, and I knew I could come up with something more interesting. It's still all about eyes . . .

A couple of poster designs for things on the way . . .the first design is for a gig I have coming up in early June. Which, just like the last will be an Ableton live set, with some video in there as well. I think this time maybe some of it will be left a bit more to chance, and I might take a few more risks. It should be a fun night anyway, and the whole thing is going to be filmed by a good friend. I will also be (as always) audio recording the whole event. The skull image is not mine, but something I found on google images, it just really fit with a layout idea I had. The second is from the forthcoming Flux remix LP launch, which is looking liek it will be a huge night.

Found this photo this morning when going through some old folders of stuff. It's interesting to look at actual film photos as apposed to digital files. I'm really not one of the old school complainers about 'the death of film' but on the other hand it is really nice to hold an image in your hands. I suppose it's a lot like vinyl as apposed to Mp3 . . .it's obviously much more of a tactile thing. I think this is interesting picture anyway, compositionally.

Watched a movie called 'The Ice Storm' tonight, which I thought was at least somewhat interesting. . .then I listened to Sylvian Chauveau 'Nauge' and this put me in a strange headspace. I hadn't really written anything in my diary in the last few days, so I pulled it out and this is what happened. These made me think about worlds within worlds and how people hide, and not even in a negative way. This line of thinking is what I got from 'The Ice Storm', as it seemed to me that a lot of the main characters were living in little spaces within spaces.

These are the things I have been working on for the last month or so. C.D designs for a A State of Flux's remix LP titled 'REFLUX'. It took a lot of teeth pulling for me to get to this final design, which at the time of writing is %99 done. I am hoping that this will see the light of day in about June, which is when the launch will be. The theme is the same as my previous entry, that of different perspectives. The simple red circle design is meant to represent an eye looking in different directions, and was also very loosely based on planetary diagrams. There are a few other little concepts in there as well, but rather than just explaining everything, go buy the CD when its out . . .hope you enjoy it.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

This is a design that literally popped into my head, and is somewhat based on planetary diagrams, and also diagrams of eyes. This MAY be applicable to what i'm currently working on, but it's hard to say. It's sort of meant to be 2 eyes in one, looking at things from different angles.

This was a piece I did a week or so ago, when developing some ideas for the current CD project I am working. So it turned into a little side thing, which AGAIN was a throw back to the Sleep Parade project. I think this is sort of interesting as there are a couple of faces in there, and I am really into these colours at the moment. I feel like the way I work has changed immensely over the last few months, and it's in a good way.

Working on some ideas for posters, and came across this video still while chatting. I instantly took a screenshot, and blew it up to A0. This is among a few things I have been working on lately, and I have been going down some strange paths. I am still hard at work on a CD cover design (which will be posted here soon), so it was nice to take a slight de-tour and do something a little different. The 4 circles is a throw back to an unused Sleep Parade design, and is one that really stuck in my head. The colours feel really right on this one, and would love to see this printed full size. I like the idea that you don;t really know what is going on this background, it could be anything.

Working on a few new things for a musical release, and it's leading me down some interesting paths. I am finding that the stencil thing is still there from the Sleep Parade designs, but this time I want to focus more on the negative space. The above illustration is a section of a huge work, as I don't want to reveal a huge amount yet, so I don't kill any suspense for the release. it's interesting for me at the start of a long process like this, because I am really starting with very little. I have a few ideas floating around, but nothing totally concrete yet. I have found that a useful tool is to do lots of things that are unrelated completely from art making, and eventually an idea will come, and probably 2 days before my deadline. I think I need to just watch some Mr. Show, or some Tim and Eric, that seems to inspire.

Finally got a hold of one of the Sleep Parade T-shirts, very happy with the end result, and I dig the colours a lot. It's been an interesting period for me, as this design has spawned a lot of other work for me. I also learned an immense amount about working with bands, and what to do and what not to do . . .looking forward to what is coming.
